Senior A

  • Camp 2 – 1 Killorglin AFC
Only 1 game this weekend for Killorglin senior set up as both the youths and the B team games were called off. The A’s were away to Camp sunday afternoon. Compliments must go to Camp on the great work done on their pitch as its in great shape. As for the game, it was a fairly even contest mostly for the first half with Killorglin’s Aiden O’Sullivan coming closest for the visitors but to no avail. 0-0 at half time – the 2nd half opened up a bit more and there was a few more chances created with both sides coming close – Tony Lyons pulling off a couple of great saves for Killorglin. You could see both sides wanted this game and there was no holding back as the tackles flew in. The introduction of Ryan Keane in 60th minute was to prove fruitful as 5 minutes later Shane O’Connor put a great ball in across goals from a free and Keano met it perfectly with a header to the corner of the net. Camp, to be fair, reacted well to the goal and started to press Killorglin and were rewarded with a goal with 15 minutes to go. A 1-1 draw seemed to be on the cards with time nearly up and would probably been a fair result but Camp pressing to the last minute had a cross from the right met at the back post, Lyons seemed to have smothered it on the line but the referee pointed to the spot. A harsh result on the away team but I suppose we are a few years away from goaline technology yet. Killorglin will have to take it on the chin. All credit to Camp with a great fight back in a game where 3 points will be a big help in what is a very tough division.

Under 13 – National Cup 1st Round

  • Killarney Athletic 3 – 5 Killorglin AFC

20141004_U13-Soccer-Team_web

The Under 13s put in a fantastic performance against a capable Killarney Athletic side in Woodlawn on Saturday morning. The team started brightly with Darragh McKeefry marshalling the back line well, and Jack O’Leary working hard in central midfield. Dylan Francis had the best of the chances early on, but was closed down quickly twice, when it seemed he would get a strike away. But Killorglin were rewarded before half time when a good move by Gearoid Hasset down the right side gave Dylan Francis the opportunity to put Killorglin 1-0 ahead, which he finished nicely! Martin Fay was solid in goal and dealt with anything Athletic had to offer.

Despite looking comfortable at the start of the second half, Killorglin conceded two goals in quick concession, and found themselves chasing the game. Ethan Coffey and Gearoid Hassett threatened to equalise on several occassions, however the introduction of Dylan Moriarty payed dividends. When his pace allowed him the opportunity to break through the middle, a classy finish put Killorglin back in the game. Dylan Moriarty again struck shortly after to put us back in the lead. Good defending from Stephen O’Loughlin, Kaiya O’Flaherty and Killian Burke ensured we stayed in front, and Darragh McKeefry was immense, sweeping and covering all around him. Tireless work from Jack O’Leary, Jack O’Connor and Aaron Broderick in midfield gave Killorglin plenty of chances of their own. And a free kick from Jack O’Connor was glanced into their own net by Athletic after close attention from Gearoid Hassett – despite the Athletic keeper doing his best to keep it out.

Late in the game, a wonderful finish from Aaron Broderick gave Killorglin some breathing space, and despite a late concession, the game finished 5-3. A trip to Ennis for the second round beckons.

Team: Martin Fay, Stephen O’Loughlin, Kaiya O’Flaherty, Darragh McKeefry, Killian Burke, Jack O’Leary, Jack O’Connor, Aaron Broderick, Ethan Coffey, Dylan Francis, Gearoid Hassett. Subs: Dylan Moriarty, Niall Carey, Cian Naylor, Oisin Cronin

Senior B

  • Killorglin AFC B 3 – 3 CG Killarney
Only one game this weekend with the youths game called off on Saturday.
Killorglin AFC B’s were at home to CG Killarney. Both teams had wins from their first game of the season and the game got off to a flyer with some lovely passing play from Killorglin which ended with Aiden O’Sullivan slipping the ball through to Darren O’Riordan who tucked it away. 1 up after 5 minutes. CG didn’t have to wait long for an equaliser tho’ as a low cross into the box wasn’t cleared and Killarney struck to make it 1-1. To be fair CG looked the more dangerous in the 1st half and broke midways through the half and were in for a 2nd. Killorglin seemed to be holding on for the break when again a cross from the left which Chris O’Connor in goals was unlucky not to hold onto fell to a CG player and Killorglin were 3-1 down at the break.
Killorglin had a lot of work to do in the 2nd half and brought in big Brendy Breen to tighten up midfield. Killorglin got a corner which Darren swung in dangerously and one of the CG players turned into his own net – back to 3-2. Killorglin kept pressing and showing a lot more commitment were rewarded with a 3rd when a good kickout from Chris onto Shane Riordan who knocked it down to Darren who with a great strike got his 2nd. 3-3
There was a couple of chances either way after that but it finished 3-3.
Team was Chris O’Connor,Christy Murphy9Sub Graham Griffen),Mike Kells(capt),Damien Mc,Dillon Carey9Brendy Breen),Andre O’Sullivan (sub Ricky Flaherty,Ed Kells,Mikey Houlihan,Aiden O’Sullivan and Darren Riordan.

  • Killarney Celtic 6 – 1 Killorglin AFC A
Only one game this “All Ireland Football” weekend, the Killorglin A’s were away to Killarney Celtic under lights Friday night. This is always a tough game for any away team as Celtic are a formidable team on the all weather surface. Killorglin got off to a dream start when Ronan Sayers was brought down just outside the box and from the resultant free Mikey Houlihan put the away side 1-0 up. Celtic started pressing and had some great movement up front and after 15 mins they broke down the left side and with a great cross Peter McCarthy met it with an unstoppable header which gave Damien McGillycuddy in the Killorglin goal no chance. With pressure piling on from Celtic, they made 3-1 on the 35th and 37th min. with 2 good long range strikes. Lee carey for Killorglin was very unlucky just before the break not to pull one back for Killorglin.
Killorglin started the 2nd half brightly and began to hold onto the ball and were starting to put a small bit of pressure on the home team. And with the introduction of Shane Riordan and Darren Houlihan, Killorglin looked like they might pull one back. Mid way through the half Mikey Houlihan made a great run and nearly got through the Celtic defence before being brought down. Tempers frayed a small bit and one of the Killorglin players ended up seeing red. That was the end for the away team really as Celtic took command and with the Killorglin team stretched, Celtic put away 3 more in the last 15 mins. despite Damien Mac’s best efforts in goal. With 3 or 4 great stops and saving a penalty aswell, it could have been worse!
Killorglin with work to do but take nothing away from Celtic – they were the better team on the night, though 6-1 maybe a bit unfair to Killorglin with the sending off having a big influence on the game. Hopefully better results to come.
M.O.T.M. for Killorglin was Damien Mc.
Team D.Mc, Ed Kells, Lar O’Connor (capt), Jerry O’Brien, Vinnie West, Lee Carey, Paul Mc, Mikey Houlihan, Ronan Sayers, Shane O’Connor and Aiden O’Sullivan. Subs used Shane Riordan, Darren Houlihan and Sean Costelloe.
Also big congatulations to the 2 Kerry Teams inc. our local lads Peter Crowley and Liam Carey from all in Killorglin AFC…”Up the Kingdom”.

  • Annascaul 1 – 3 Killorglin AFC B

2 games this weekend for Killorglin. The B-team got their season underway with a fantastic win away to Annascaul FC (played in KDL). After a poor start which saw Niall O’Shea (starting in goal for the B’s) unlucky to give away a penalty after about 20 mins  and picking up an injury at the same time, Chris O’Connor stepped into goals with his first job to pick the ball out of the net. To be fair to Killorglin though, they kept their heads up and started to play some lovely football – all working hard for each other and they were rewarded with a goal before half time. From a corner, Stuart Delaney had 2 attempts at goal, one off the crossbar and a second stopped on the line before Shane Riordan struck on the loose ball to make it 1-1 at half time. Killorglin got off to a dream start in the second half and Shane Riordan got his 2nd after Aiden “Nat” O’Sullivan hit the woodwork with a great shot – Shane was in the right place to nod home his 2nd. Annascaul, to be fair, put on a bit of pressure after that and were unlucky not to score from a corner but with about 20 mins to go Killorglin got a 3rd after some lovely passing play saw Nat turn inside the box and lay on the ball to Mikey Houlihan who cooly slotted away the ball. The game was effectively over at that stage but Annascaul kept plugging away. However, Killorglins defence stayed solid under the ever youthful Mikey Kells. There was massive performances all over the pitch for Killorglin but m.o.t.m. had to go to Shane Riordan who worked tirelessly all day and 2 goals aswell. A good game played in great spirit.

Killorglin Team: Niall O’Shea (sub Chris O’Connor), Christy Murphy, Ed Kelliher, Mikey Kells, Dillon Carey, Mike Carey(sub Ryan O’Riordan), Stuart Delaney(Capt.), Mikey Houlihan, Shane Riordan(sub Kian Griffin), Aiden O’Sullivan, Sean Costelloe. Subs: Alan O’Dwyer, Gerome Houlihan, Thomas Etherington, Damien Mc.

  • Killorglin AFC Youths  1 – 1 Killarney Athletic

The Youths also got their season underway on Sat. with a home game to Killarney Athletic. Derek George’s lads played some lovely football and even though they went behind in the 1st half they never lost heart and were rewarded for their efforts when young Darren Houlihan found the net in his first game for the youths. The game finished 1-1 which was probably a fair result. m.o.t.m. went to Jack O’Connor who worked his socks off all day and with some players missing saturday to come back into the reckoning hopefully Killorglin can hold their own in that division this season.

Thats it for this week – we will take next Sunday off and wish the Kerry team the best of luck !!!

The Killorglin kids soccer academy starts back on Saturday mornings for 6-10 year olds. 9.30 – 11.00 am. If we are to continue to provide soccer for the exceptional number of kids that arrive on a Saturday morning, it is essential that parents get involved. If you have the time to spare, any help would be really appreciated. No experience necessary – just talk to any of the coaches on a Saturday morning!

Seniors Review – 30th March 2014

Seniors Review – 30th March 2014

The lads have had some great performances of late and got a great draw against a strong Park team and probably unlucky not to take all 3 points. The game finished 2-2 with 2 goals from the newlywed (marraige must be suiting) Paul McKenna. The first a cracking strike from outside the 18 yd box, before Park equalised. Macca made it 2-1 before half time with a clever header from a throw in. Park levelled again in the 2nd half. Killorglin had a couple of penalty shouts turned down in the 2nd half also but were holding on in the end. Still a point that manager Mike Griffen would have probably taken and thats a run of 4 games unbeaten. M.O.T.M. goes to the honeymooner Macca with his first goals of the season and hopefully the A’s getting closer to holding Premier A status.
