Senior B

  • Killorglin AFC 6 – 0 Ballyheigue

The senior B-Team were in action on Sunday at home to Ballyheigue and were in desperate need of a big result after some poor performances of late – and thats exactly what they gave. With some key players out including captain Stuart Delaney, Brendy Breen and DiCanio through injury, there needed to be a bit of a revamp and the Kelliher  brothers Mike and Edwin stepped up to the task. The game was evenly enough matched until a couple of minutes to half time when young Shane Riordan struck on a loose ball outside the box and put the home team 1-0 up going in to the break.

This gave the home team a bit of confidence and they started to get a hold on the game and from a corner Shane Riordan pressed the Keeper and the ball dropped behind the line (we’ll give him that one for effort) Killorglin took the foot off the pedal after that and left B’heigue into the game but with a great run from Jamie O’Sullivan rounding 2 players he slotted away Killorglins 3rd. Vinnie West on for Jacko Foley with a good run up the right wing struck for the 4th. Then the “goal of the game” with a Lionel Messi like run from the half way line saw Pa Knightly coolly slot away the 5th. Late sub Ryan O’Riordan also put away a great strike to make it 6-0. A massive performance with every man on the pitch giving 100% and hopefully will give us the confidence for the rest of the season. M.O.T.M. had to be Edwin Kelliher in as sweeper. Nice to see him back in action. Team was Chris O’Connor, Dan Hogan, Edwin Kells, Damien Mc(capt.), Jacko Breen, Mike Kells, Pa Knightly, Jamie O’Sullivan, Shane Riordan, Kevin O’Brien and Jacko Foley. Subs Vinnie West, Mitch & Ryan Riordan.

  • Asdee 2 – 2 Killorglin AFC

The U-17’s were away to Asdee on Saturday and came away with a valuable point. It was a game with chances galore but stayed goalless at half time. The second half was a different prospect and a goal from Daniel Whittleton put Killorglin ahead. But some poor marking from 2 set pieces gave Asdee a 2-1 lead. Then with less than 10 minutes on the clock that man Dan stepped up again to gain a point for Killorglin. A great game from both sides with some solid performances from 2 goal Daniel Whittleton, Jack O’Connor and Neil Cronin, but M.O.T.M has to go to the man between the posts Kevin Coffey with an outstanding game in goal. Derek George taking a lot of positives from the game.

Senior B

  • Killorglin AFC 1 – 7 Listowel Celtic

One game this week in the senior section, the B team were at home to Listowel Celtic on Sunday morning but the news was not good. The game started ok with neither team making much impact until about the 20th minute when Listowel won a free just outside the Killorglin area. From the cross they scored the first goal from an unchallenged header. They went on to get a 2nd in similar fashion from a corner and got a third just before half time.

Not looking good at half time but to be fair to Killorglin they kept the heads up and had 2 or 3 good chances early in the 2nd half with Shane Riordan and Jacko foley both going close before Killorglin got their reward. They got an indirect free inside the Listowel area and with a clever touch from Kieran “Sheazo” O’Shea rolled the ball on for Jacko Breen to tuck it away. That was as good as it got for Killorglin after that as a solid penalty claim by Shane Riordan was dismissed the resulting play led to a fourth from Listowel. And that was the end of the game as a contest. To be fair, the lads pushed on but to no avail. The game finished 7-1 to the visitors. Even Listowel will admit Killorglin didn’t deserve that scoreline but no excuses. There is some defensive homework to do. Hard to pick a MOTM with a scoreline like that, but credit to Jacko Breen who did get the goal and kept trying the whole game. Things need to improve – lets hope it starts next week.

Youths

  • Dingle 6 – 2 Killorglin AFC

The Youths played away to dingle on Saturday and with a lot of the actual youth team missing, we were once again relying heavily on the U-17’s. Although the game finished 6-2 to Dingle in the end, the lads acquitted themselves well with Neil O’Shea and Daniel Whittleton (penalty) getting the goals.

Senior – Premier A

  • Killarney Athletic 5 – 1 Killorglin AFC

The A’s were away to Killarney Athletic on Sunday morning, and after a great start to the game took the lead with a fantastic goal from David Coffey. Unfortunately that was as good as it got as the home team started to get the upper hand and by half time were 3-1 up. The game finished 5-1 to Athletic so the A’s still with work to do to get up to speed with the Premier A division.

Senior – Division 1B

  • Skelliga FC 3 – 1 Killorglin AFC

The B team were also away on Sunday morning to the newly formed Skelliga FC. Skelliga are very strong this year and will be hoping to win Division 1B so it was always going to be a tough ask for Killorglin. But the game was closely matched for about 20 minutes until Skelliga made the breakthrough with a goal that could have easily been pulled back for offside. But to be fair to the lads they kept plugging away and were rewarded with an equaliser just before half time. A corner from Pa Knightly was swung in, Shane Riordan with the nod back and Kevin O’Brien with a fantastic strike on the volley to finish it off. So Killorglin went in at half time in good form.

The second half was nip and tuck until about the 65th minute when, from a Skelliga corner, Brendy Breen was adjudged to have leaned in and handled the ball. It was a harsh decision and Skelliga went 2-1 up from the spot. Killorglin heads seemed to drop a bit after that and with a great move from Skelliga they got a 3rd. Killorglin kept going and had a few chances with Shane Riordan going very close towards the end but with no luck. Still a lot of positives to take from the game with good performances from Dan Horgan and Kevin O’Brien (M.O.T.M.) back in the team. There will be easier games ahead for the B’s with 4 out of the 5 games played having been against the top 3 teams in the division.

  • Killorglin AFC 5 – 1 Listowel Celtic
Listowel Celtic came to Killorglin on Saturday and we were expecting a tough game – and so it turned out. Having struggled in midfield in previous games, we played three in the centre and Darragh McKeefry, Jack O’Leary and Niall Carey were superb in the first half, breaking up play well, and dominating the middle of the park. Jack O’Connor and Aaron Broderick were dangerous in attack, and Gearoid Hassett playing up front on his own, gave Celtic plenty to worry about. It was Gearoid who opened the scoring in the first half, and in truth, we were unlucky not to increase the lead on several occasions. But Celtic upped the pace in the second period, and got a deserved equaliser midway through the half. Cian Naylor in goal made some great saves to keep us in the game, and Sean Corcoran was strong alongside Ruairi Murphy in the middle of defence. But some fresh legs were needed and the introduction of Stephen O’Loughlin and Ethan Coffey relieved the pressure at the back, and Killian Burke gave us back control of the game in midfield. A fantastic final ten minutes saw Gearoid get a second, followed by goals from Darragh McKeefry, Ethan Coffey and Jack O’Connor. A fantastic display and a deserved result. Team: Cian Naylor, Kaiya O’Flaherty, Ethan Garcia, Ruairi Murphy, Sean Corcoran, Niall Carey, Jack O’Leary, Darragh McKeefry, Aaron Broderick, Jack O’Connor, Gearoid Hassett. Subs: Martin Fay, Stephen O’Loughlin, Ethan Coffey, Oisin Cronin, Jason O’Sullivan, Killian Burke, Sean Cleary.

Senior A

  • Killorglin AFC 0 – 3 Castleisland

The visitors were extremely well organised and put Killorglin under pressure from the start and scored midway through the first half. It stayed at 1-0 at half time. Killorglin started the second half a lot better and looked like they might equalise until a mix up at the back left Castleisland in for a second. That killed off the game and it ended 3-0 to the visitors. Killorglin still with work to do…

Youths

  • St Brendans Park 9 – 3 Killorglin AFC

The youths were in action on Saturday away to Park. Killorglin are finding it tough to get numbers at this level and had only the bare 11. They held Park to 2-1 at half time but the floodgates opened in the 2nd half and a flurry of goals by the opposition meant the game finished 9-3 to Park. Killorglin scorers were Liam Carey (2) and Aidan Cox.
